Esperanza
A wall-sized abstract painting in oil on raw canvas. Soft yet dynamic with fluid forms evoking leaves, flowers, stars, and roots.
Esperanza, “hope” in Spanish
Esperanza is the name of my aunt, the only living daughter of my Mexican grandparents who had eight children. This painting represents the last vestige of hope in a landscape mired in destruction. There is a drowning, underwater feeling that emerged as I was working. And yet the persistent rising up of forms—plants, bubbles, stars. All that has fallen makes the ground fertile for what’s to come.
