Una Vida Propia
Una Vida Propia, “a life of its own” in Spanish, is a work that emerged subtly at first, then with a roar. The overall quietude and symmetrical composition is slowly overtaken upon further viewing, giving way to the colors that seem to shimmer and emerge from the visual field.
A life of its own.
Approaching my work intuitively sometimes brings anxiety into the process—so much remains unknown in the early stages about what direction the painting will take.
In the case of Una Vida Propia, the process emerged with such clarity and force that there was no time to think twice, let alone feel anxious. I had immediate certainty about what this painting wanted to be.
Painted on raw, un-stretched canvas, the medium dictated the direction in a way. Raw canvas absorbs paint quickly, making each stroke resonate at a quieter frequency. The dominant floral forms emerged first and were quickly echoed by the smaller, supporting strokes that emanate from the lower foreground.
The overall painting has a golden-hued underpainting that shimmers through the layers of paint.
