This painting began with a technique called scumbling, where you use a stiff brush and undiluted paint to scrub a thin, textured layer onto the surface.
I was inspired by the artist Maja Ruznic, who began scumbling as a way to save money (scumbling spreads paint without solvent or medium), but has continued doing so well into her successful career. Her paintings hum with the energy of her dry brush, and I wanted to imbue the underlayer of this piece with that same frequency.
I was delighted to find that glazing on top of this texture created remarkable depth and dimension.
